Sassafras Tree

The scent of the sassafras tree is difficult to describe in words. Exciting: there are 3 different leaf shapes on one tree.

The Sassafras tree (Sassafras albidum), which can grow up to 35 meters high, played an important role in traditional medicine in its natural habitat on the North American east coast. The bark, with its essential oils, was used to produce flavourings and served as the main ingredient for non-alcoholic root beer. The leaves vary in shape depending upon the given light conditions. The name "sassafras" comes from Spanish and means "stone-breaking", which refers to the plant’s healing effect on bladder stones.
