Flowering Dogwood
Cornus Venus – that's the name of the diva among the flowering dogwoods. Where could she feel more at home than on the grand stage of the Lichtentaler Allee, admired by all passers-by?
Flowering dogwood is one of the most attractive flowering shrubs found in gardens. In the 1960s, new cultivars were created at Rutgers University in New Jersey by crossing Asian and North American species. It was here that the Baden-Baden shrub expert Wolfgang Eberts discovered the large-flowered variety Venus and introduced it to Europe. In mid-May, they enchant European parks with their extraordinary creamy-white blossoms. In autumn, the large shrubs boast impressive autumnal colours and red, decorative, morning star-like fruit.
