Bamboo

The botanical family of bamboos includes a large number of different species that are native to countries outside Europe. However, some of them also grow well here in the arboretum.

The robust grasses are famous for their rapid root growth (rhizomes). A rhizome barrier is therefore highly recommended when planting some bamboo species. There are also less expansive tree bamboos (Fargesia) that grow like clumps and are well suited as evergreen, drought-tolerant structure builders in the home garden. In Feng Shui, the traditional Chinese practice of harmonising environments, bamboo is often regarded as a symbol of good luck.
