Bald Cypress
The bald cypress (Taxodium distichum) is an extraordinary tree!
Can you see the "root bumps" at the water's edge? These are the "breathing knees" of the tree, which it uses for air and gas exchange. This characteristic allows it to grow in very humid to wet locations. The tree, which is native to the southern east coast of America, often grows along the edges of water bodies or swamps. Another outstanding feature of the bald cypress is its long life expectancy of up to 1000 years in its natural habitat, shedding its copper-coloured needles in winter.
