More about the artwork
Erwin Wurm takes his exploration of the concept of the human body even further by depicting clothing in an anthropomorphic group of sculptures: Two giant pink aluminum suits are frozen in the moment by the artist as they move and twist their bodies.
The title refers to Henry David Thoreau's 1849 essay Civil Disobedience, in which the author suggests a defense and a rebellion of the consciousness of each individual to refuse the general understanding of justice imposed by the ruling political power. The two characters embody the will to imagine things beyond common sense, things that emphasize the imagination of each. By playing with the boundary between the visible and the invisible, the external and the internal, Wurm changes the perception of reality and leads the viewer to something greater.
